Gadchiroli, : On one hand, changing lifestyles, rising addiction, and the growing burden of life-threatening diseases like cancer; on the other, a few individuals who continue to light a lamp of hope in this darkness—Gadchiroli has found such an identity in Dr Manish Meshram. “If we want a cancer-free society, lifestyle change is not an option but a necessity,” he asserts, turning a medical message into a larger social movement through continuous cancer screening and awareness initiatives at the District General Hospital.
What began on World Cancer Day has now evolved into a sustained campaign reaching villages across the district. Whether it is breast cancer, oral cancer, or other forms, the focus remains on early detection, timely diagnosis, and breaking the fear associated with the disease. “Awareness, not fear, is the real protection,” is the core message now resonating among the people.
However, the true strength of this campaign lies not just in the program, but in the personality driving it. The COVID-19 pandemic was one of the most challenging phases in healthcare history. While fear gripped systems and many stepped back from responsibilities, in the remote forests and inaccessible terrains of Gadchiroli and Bhamragarh, one doctor stood firm—Dr Manish Meshram.
Be it midnight or dawn, heavy rains or complete isolation, he continued his service with a single mission: to save lives. From respiratory diseases to ICU critical care, chemotherapy for cancer patients, de-addiction treatment, and mental health services—his contribution spans across every critical domain. For thousands of families, his work has not just been service, but a second chance at life. Today, he is not merely known as a doctor, but as a “messenger of life” among the locals.
Despite gaining extensive experience at reputed medical institutions in Wardha, Nagpur, and Mumbai, Dr Meshram consciously chose to serve in a tribal and remote district like Gadchiroli over a comfortable urban career. This decision reflects not just professional commitment, but a deep-rooted sense of social responsibility. His work is marked by clinical excellence, psychological insight, and a compassionate connection with patients.
Clearing the MPSC examination and being selected as a Class 1 Pulmonologist is a formal recognition of his merit, but his true identity lies beyond official titles—in the countless lives he has saved and the gratitude in the eyes of those families.
Amid rising mental stress in society, he has also emphasized strengthening counselling systems in educational institutions. He advocates for integrating mental health support alongside academic learning, highlighting the importance of emotional resilience among students.
As Gadchiroli emerges on the national map as a potential “steel hub,” development must also be matched with strong healthcare foundations. With the vision set by Chief Minister and District Guardian Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the role of dedicated professionals like Dr Meshram becomes even more crucial. If given the right platform and responsibility, such individuals can transform not only healthcare but the overall image of the district.
